No, The Enemy Can’t!  A God Story…

The arrival of some bad news early Sunday morning. Fear gave way to a decision to surrender and a determination to trust God. Monday morning on a walk to the post office, a song came into my mind. I found myself repeating the chorus of that song all the way to the post office. The cold air biting my cheeks and sneaking its way past my collar. I snapped the weather strap and tightened my hood to barricade the cold from without. The cold from within beginning to thaw with the words of the song.

No, the enemy can’t

Take what I have

Change who I am

I belong to You

With each step on the icy path, I pray these words, each repeat designated to a specific person heavy on my heart. I knew the song had more to tell me so this morning I searched on YouTube, and discovered the name of the song is Belong to You [Enemy Can’t] by Here Be Lions.  I settled in to hear the full song. But my YouTube app kept failing. Spinning. Closing. Asking if I wanted to wait or stop.  I was disappointed. The cold inside returning like a draft and at that moment, oh how I needed to have the warmth of those words.

This effort in defeat was interrupted by the arrival of my daughter, Lily, here to offer me her turn at my Christmas present request (namely, to help me clean the basement) We were getting prepped to paint the walls and Lily asked for some music. I got my tablet and opened Praise FM app. The first song playing was—you guessed it– Belong to You. I cried. Lily hugged me and our painting began. A blessing upon a blessing. God is good. He knows.  He knows…

Belong To You [The Enemy Can’t]

Full lyrics below. Treat yourself to these promises and take a listen to the song by Here Be Lions.

You called me out of darkness
And You silence every lie
And no other voice will define me
‘Cause I belong to You,
I belong to You

By Your blood I’ve been adopted
And I’ve taken on Your name
And I need to be reminded
That I belong to You,
I belong to You

[Chorus]
And the enemy can’t
Take what I have
Or change who I am I belong to You

[Bridge]
Greater are You who’s in me
Than he who’s in the world
The words that You have spoken
Are stronger than the curse!

[Chorus] And the enemy can’t
Take what I have
Or change who I am I belong to You
No, the enemy can’t
Take what I have
Or change who I am
I belong to You

Perhaps, like me, you’ve just received bad news, or the weather on the inside is as cold as the winter on the outside. And you need truth. A reminder that you belong. You are loved. Greater is God in you than any enemy on the outside.

May this new year be one of remembering who you are and whose you are!

I have called you by name; you are Mine!– Isaiah 43:1
